Semen analysis
The basic test of male fertility: a semen sample is examined for sperm count, movement and shape, to guide what happens next for the couple.

About semen analysis
A semen analysis evaluates a semen sample in the laboratory. It measures the volume of semen, the number of sperm (count and concentration), how well they move (motility) and their shape (morphology), along with other features of the sample.
Because male factors can contribute to difficulty conceiving, a semen analysis is usually recommended early in the evaluation of a couple. At Skanda Fertility & Women's Health Centre, Thanjavur, the result is interpreted alongside the female partner's evaluation.
What a semen analysis measures
The report usually includes:
- Semen volume
- Sperm concentration and total count
- Sperm motility (movement)
- Sperm morphology (shape)
- Vitality, when motility is low
- pH, liquefaction and appearance
- White blood cells, which may suggest infection
Results are compared with reference values published by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Preparing for the test
To give a reliable result:
Abstain from ejaculation for 2 to 5 days before the test
Collect the sample by masturbation into the sterile container provided
Avoid lubricants, saliva and condoms, which can affect sperm
Make sure the sample reaches the laboratory within about an hour
Tell the team about any recent fever or illness
A repeat test may be advised, as results can vary
The team will give you the exact instructions when you book.

After the result
A semen analysis is often the first step rather than the last. Depending on the result, the next step may be a repeat test, a sperm DNA fragmentation test, hormone tests, or a discussion of treatment options such as IUI, IVF or ICSI.

Mon – Sat: 8:30 am – 5:00 pm · Sunday: by prior appointment only · Please contact us in advance to schedule your appointment.
Call +91 73589 75682Why might I need to repeat the test?
Semen quality can vary from one sample to another, and a recent fever or illness can affect results for a few months. If the first result is abnormal, a repeat test is usually advised before drawing conclusions.
What does a low sperm count mean?
A low sperm count can make conception take longer, but it does not necessarily mean pregnancy is not possible. Treatment options depend on the cause and on the couple's overall evaluation.
What if no sperm are found?
This is called azoospermia. Further tests are needed to find the cause, and in some men sperm can be retrieved surgically for use in ICSI.
Can lifestyle affect semen quality?
Smoking, alcohol, excess weight, heat exposure and some medicines can affect sperm. Your specialist can advise on changes that may help.
