About hormonal analysis
Hormones control ovulation, the development of eggs and the preparation of the lining of the uterus for pregnancy. A hormonal analysis uses blood tests, some of them timed to particular days of the menstrual cycle, to understand how these systems are working.
At Skanda Fertility & Women's Health Centre, Thanjavur, the tests are chosen based on your menstrual history, symptoms, age and how long you have been trying to conceive, and the results are discussed with you as part of planning your care.
What the tests may look at
Depending on your history, a hormonal analysis may include:
- FSH and LH, which control egg development and ovulation
- Oestradiol (E2), made by the developing follicles
- AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone), an indicator of ovarian reserve
- Progesterone, to help confirm that ovulation has taken place
- Prolactin, which can disturb ovulation when raised
- Thyroid function (TSH), as thyroid problems can affect cycles and pregnancy
- Androgens such as testosterone, when PCOD is suspected
- Blood sugar and insulin-related tests where appropriate
Not every test is needed for everyone. Some are timed to specific days of the cycle, and the team will tell you when to come.

When hormonal analysis may help
A hormonal analysis may be recommended in situations such as:
- Irregular, infrequent or absent periods
- Difficulty conceiving
- Suspected PCOD or ovulation problems
- Before ovulation induction, IUI or IVF
- Previous unsuccessful fertility treatment
- Symptoms that may point to a hormonal cause, such as excess hair growth

Call +91 73589 75682Do I need to fast for hormone tests?
Most fertility hormone tests do not need fasting, but some blood sugar and insulin tests do. You will be told if any preparation is needed when the tests are planned.
Why are some tests done on day 2 or 3 of the period?
Hormones such as FSH, LH and oestradiol change through the cycle. Measuring them early in the cycle gives a baseline that is easier to interpret. Progesterone, by contrast, is usually checked in the second half of the cycle to help confirm ovulation.
What does AMH tell me?
AMH gives an indication of ovarian reserve, the number of eggs remaining in the ovaries. It does not measure egg quality and cannot by itself predict whether you will conceive naturally, but it helps in planning treatment.
Will hormonal analysis tell me why I am not conceiving?
It can identify hormonal factors that may be affecting fertility, but it is usually one part of a wider evaluation, which may also include an ultrasound scan, a check of the fallopian tubes and a semen analysis for the male partner.
