About IUI

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment in which prepared sperm are placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. The procedure is intended to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes and may be used in selected cases of infertility.

At Skanda Fertility & Women's Health Centre, Thanjavur, IUI may be recommended based on the couple’s fertility evaluation, ovulation pattern, sperm parameters, and other individual factors.

The IUI treatment process

An IUI treatment cycle may involve several steps, including:

  1. Assessment of the menstrual cycle and ovulation

  2. Ovulation monitoring through appropriate scans

  3. Fertility medications when clinically indicated

  4. Collection of a semen sample

  5. Laboratory preparation of the sperm sample

  6. Placement of the prepared sperm into the uterus using a thin catheter

  7. Follow-up and pregnancy testing at the appropriate time

The treatment protocol can vary depending on the individual’s fertility condition and response to treatment.

Who may consider IUI?

IUI may be considered in selected cases such as:

  • Unexplained infertility
  • Certain ovulation-related fertility problems
  • Mild male-factor infertility
  • Difficulty with sperm reaching the reproductive tract
  • Use of donor sperm where appropriate
  • Certain cases of cervical or reproductive factors affecting conception

A fertility specialist can determine whether IUI is appropriate after evaluating both partners and considering the overall fertility history.

IUI and ovulation monitoring

Ovulation is an important part of IUI treatment. The fertility team may monitor follicular development and ovulation using ultrasound scans and other appropriate assessments.

Depending on the treatment plan, medication may be used to support ovulation. The timing of insemination is then planned around the expected time of ovulation.

What is IUI?

IUI, or Intrauterine Insemination, is a fertility treatment in which specially prepared sperm are placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation to assist conception.

Who can benefit from IUI?

IUI may be considered for selected cases of unexplained infertility, ovulation problems, mild male-factor infertility, and certain other reproductive conditions. Suitability depends on the individual's fertility assessment.

How is IUI performed?

A semen sample is collected and processed in the laboratory to prepare the sperm. The prepared sperm are then placed into the uterus using a thin catheter, usually around the time of ovulation.

Is IUI painful?

IUI is generally a simple procedure and most people experience little or no discomfort. Some may experience mild cramping or temporary discomfort during or after the procedure.

How many IUI cycles may be needed?

The number of IUI cycles varies between individuals. A fertility specialist may review the response to treatment and other factors before deciding whether to continue IUI or consider another fertility treatment.

Is ovulation stimulation required for IUI?

Not always. IUI may be performed with a natural ovulatory cycle or with fertility medication, depending on the individual's condition and treatment plan.
