About donor ovum treatment

Donor ovum treatment, also called egg donation, is IVF in which eggs from a donor are fertilised in the laboratory with the male partner's sperm. The resulting embryo is transferred into the uterus of the woman who wishes to carry the pregnancy.

In India, egg donation is regulated under the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021. At Skanda Fertility & Women's Health Centre, Thanjavur, couples are guided through the evaluation, counselling and consent before treatment begins.

Who may consider donor eggs?

Donor ovum treatment may be considered in situations such as:

  • Very low ovarian reserve
  • Premature ovarian insufficiency or early menopause
  • Repeated poor response to ovarian stimulation
  • Repeated unsuccessful IVF thought to be related to egg quality
  • Ovaries removed or damaged by surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy
  • A genetic condition the woman does not wish to pass on

A specialist reviews your history and results, including AMH and ultrasound findings, before donor eggs are suggested.

How the treatment usually proceeds

The process may include:

  1. Evaluation of the couple, including the uterus and a semen analysis

  2. Counselling and written consent

  3. Donor eggs arranged as permitted by law

  4. Preparing the lining of the uterus

  5. Fertilising the donor eggs with the partner's sperm (IVF or ICSI)

  6. Embryo transfer, and freezing of suitable extra embryos

  7. A pregnancy test about two weeks after the transfer

Making the decision

Choosing donor eggs can bring up many feelings. Counselling gives the couple space to talk through the treatment, what it means for their family and its legal aspects before giving consent.

The donor's identity is kept confidential, as the law requires.

Will the baby be genetically related to me?

The baby will be genetically related to the male partner, whose sperm is used, but not to the woman carrying the pregnancy. She carries the pregnancy and gives birth to the baby.

Who can be an egg donor?

Who may donate, the screening required and how often a donor may donate are set by the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021. Donors are screened medically before donation.

Do I need to take medicines?

Yes, usually. The recipient takes medicines to prepare the lining of the uterus and to support it after the transfer. The plan is explained before treatment starts.

Is egg donation confidential?

Yes. The identity of the donor is kept confidential, as required by law.
