About donor embryo transfer
Donor embryo transfer is a treatment in which an embryo created from donated eggs and donated sperm is transferred into the uterus of the woman who wishes to carry the pregnancy. It may be considered when neither partner's eggs nor sperm can be used.
In India, the use of donor eggs, sperm and embryos is regulated under the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021. At Skanda Fertility & Women's Health Centre, Thanjavur, the medical, emotional and legal aspects of donor treatment are discussed with the couple before treatment begins.
Who may consider donor embryo transfer?
Donor embryo transfer may be considered in situations such as:
- Fertility factors in both partners that rule out using their own eggs and sperm
- Very low ovarian reserve together with severe male factor infertility
- Repeated unsuccessful IVF with the couple's own embryos, in selected cases
- A genetic condition in both partners that the couple do not wish to pass on
Donor treatment is considered only after a full evaluation and counselling.
How the treatment usually proceeds
The process may include:
Evaluation of the woman's health and of the uterus
Counselling and the written consent of the couple
Arranging donor embryos as permitted by law
Preparing the lining of the uterus with medication
Thawing and transfer of the embryo
Medicines to support the lining, and a pregnancy test about two weeks later

Counselling and consent
Using donated embryos is a significant decision. Couples are given time to understand the treatment, its chances and its legal aspects, and to ask questions before giving consent.
The identity of the donors is kept confidential, as the law requires.
